I have a friend who has a website built by someone who offers Web Design in Ringwood. I pointed out to said friend that the links to the home page were incorrectly coded. So, as most of us would, he contacted the web designer guy in Ringwood and pointed out what I had said.
Alas, as is the case with numerous web designers in the past, he was told that I was wrong and it is how web designers always do it. Well, something that is technically wrong, is still technically wrong even of the whole world is doing it?
Why do web designers think they know best? They build websites BUT more often than not these websites don’t rank in the search engine results pages or SERPS. Why? Usually because of these little mistakes that lose the odd point or two in the algorithm.
Anyone who knows me will know my rule that if you competitor scores X, you need to score X+1 to outrank him. Having a website coded correctly will help you achieve this. I checked the website of this particular web designer and lo and behold, his site had the same linking issue; pointing to the file and not the actual URL. I guess that is why this particular guy is only fifth for web design in Ringwood.
Never use /index.(whatever ending). As the link in a website, you can use just the “/” if you want, and ALWAYS redirect the subdomain you are not applying to the one you are. In other words, if you are not using www, then redirect the www back to the non-www version of your website. If you are using the www; don’t forget to redirect the non-www.
